Both Facebook and Twitter are moving, slowly and cautiously, toward displaying ads in users' main streams.
Facebook has moved from clearly segregated and labeled ads on the right side of its page to Sponsored Stories, which were introduced this year and look more like natural stories. They let advertisers promote users' Likes, check-ins, and app use, so that such items from your friends show up among the ads on the right side of your page.
