How the Growth of Internet TV Affects Marketers

IPTV is not new, but it is definitely growing at a fast pace. So what is IPTV, and why do we care that it’s growing so rapidly?

In not-so technical terms, IPTV or Internet Protocol Television is basically a way to watch TV through the Internet. As more and more consumers stream their television content via the ‘net, the days of traditional satellite and cable TV watching are being threatened.

According to MediaPost News, television delivered by IPTV systems is expected to double in the next four years. At the end of 2011, the number of subscribers reached 53 million. With the increasing sophistication of technology, more people will have access and that number is expected to reach 105 million subscribers by 2015.
Change is always a challenge, but IPTV does have its benefits. There are definitely more channel choices and interactive features. Frustrated satellite users will also not need to worry about bad signals during not-so-great weather conditions.
IPTV is not only beneficial to consumers, but it is also beneficial to marketers. Unfortunately, many marketers are still a little timid when it comes to advertising on new/unknown media.
